My Ebullient Experience : Simran's NonProfit

Simran's Life Experience

I still remember the day and the date like no other. On December 25th, 2019, my grandpa was diagnosed with Leukemia Blood Cancer. Being in the fifth grade, and not clearly understanding what the word meant, I remember resorting to a simple Google search for research. Leukemia it said, a cancer of both blood-forming tissues and cells. It took me a while to understand the seriousness of the disease, but as the days went on and I witnessed the ongoing pain in my family's eyes, I came to see how powerful cancer is. Cancer, a simple word, can grasp a hold of an entire family. My family was one of the millions affected by the illness. 20 days after his diagnosis, my grandpa passed away on Christmas day.

This experience and losing a loved one opened up my eyes at a young age to the bigger outside world. At the age of 15, I decided I wanted to find a way that I could use to aid patients and their families going through a tough time. I started to brainstorm ideas and methods of how I could implement change, and by the age of 16, I was able to start my non-profit organization called Leukemia Together.

Simran's NonProfit Organization

The Leukemia Together Organization strives to be a support system for patients with Leukemia Blood Cancer. Building a supportive community for patients with Leukemia is a token of kindness meant to promote empowerment, understanding, and support. Leukemia Together also helps educate and promote Leukemia awareness among many students in the United States. With this Organization I hope to be a backbone of support for patients and their families.

Through the Organization, I was able to communicate with many family members who are struggling watching their loved ones battle this illness. Talking to family members of patients, and patients themselves has let me understand the world and sickness on a deeper level. No one knows what tomorrow holds and it is important to live in the moment. It is important not to get hung up on small things in life, and instead grow an appreciation for the bigger aspects of life.

By seeing the big smiles spread from patient to patient from simply making encouragement cards for them, my motivation never fails to decline. Seeing a patient or family member glow with happiness and feel supported, makes my day. I don't think anything would make me happier.

The community needs to keep coming together to act. Together anything is possible and we are all capable of more than we know, regardless of our age. Let your compassion always shine through. I will forever try my best to help the community and I am sure of it. Help the community, even if it is through a small act of kindness, it is sure to make one's day. Be that glitter of light in someone's day.

The community I have made at Leukemia Together will always have the most special place in my heart.
